1) What does “making your move” mean to you at this stage of your career?

At this stage, “making my move” means owning my expertise and using it with confidence. I’m not waiting to be invited into the conversation – I’m stepping in, contributing, and driving results. It’s about being assertive in the best way. I know what I bring, speak up for the value of my role, and set myself up so that when annual review time comes around, I can honestly say, “I’m freaking killing it!”

2) Can you share a moment when you took action that moved your career forward?

The biggest moment was getting my company to say “yes” to creating my Production Training Specialist role. It didn’t happen by accident — I had been advocating for the need, building the case, and showing the gaps. When that still wasn’t moving fast enough, I updated my LinkedIn status to “open to work” and went on a few interviews. That got their attention. Let’s just say the enthusiasm to keep me suddenly increased. Once that door opened, I built out the production-side training program, added virtual training and demos on equipment we could not previously access, and expanded the support we could offer. That decision to take control of my own career path absolutely made my move possible.

3) What helped you recognize the right time to make that move?

I realized it was the right time when I’d been doing the job unofficially for years while the formal role sat in limbo. The position took about three and a half years to materialize; part COVID, part corporate pacing… and eventually it became clear that waiting wasn’t going to get me anywhere. At that point, I had a 3yr old at home, and I needed both career growth and a paycheck that matched the work I was already doing. It turned into a very straightforward “now or never,” and choosing “now” is what made everything finally move.

4) What advice would you give women in print who are considering their next move?

Honestly? If you’ve been speaking up about what you want and it’s still crickets or a broken record of “looking into it next quarter,” don’t hang around hoping someone will suddenly “get it.” Look elsewhere sooner. Your time is valuable.

Don’t be afraid to be a little pushy in a productive way. Sometimes that’s the only way things actually move forward!

Reminder: Nobody is riding in on a white horse to hand you the perfect role. Be your own knight in shining armor! Suit up, advocate for yourself, and go after the opportunities that actually appreciate what you bring to the table.
